How to talk to a girl at a coffee shop
Coffee shops are great for meeting someone, as long as you pick the right moment. The line and the pickup counter are fair game. The girl with headphones and a laptop deep in work is not.
Val's read
When a guy in line asks me what's actually good here, i'm happy to answer, i have opinions. When a guy pulls up a chair at my table while i'm clearly working, i feel trapped, because i can't leave without packing everything up. The best coffee shop guys talk to me where i'm already standing and moving.
Who's open to it
- Open, in line, waiting at the pickup counter, reading a book, people watching, at the condiment bar.
- Not open, headphones on and typing, on a call, in a meeting, clearly racing the clock.
Exact openers
- In line, "ok what's actually good here, i always panic and order a latte"
- At pickup, "please tell me that's not the oat milk thing, i've been waiting twenty minutes for it"
- If she's reading, "is that book good, i've been seeing it everywhere"
- If she looks up from her table and smiles, "is it always this packed or did everyone get the same idea"
Body language
Do
- Talk in line or at the counter, where you're both already standing.
- Keep a normal distance and an open, relaxed posture.
- Let her decide if the chat continues past the counter.
Don't
- Don't sit at her table uninvited.
- Don't tap her shoulder or wave in front of her screen.
- Don't wait for her to leave and follow her out.
Signs she's into it
- She answers and asks what you're getting.
- She lingers at the counter after her drink is ready.
- She takes her headphones off, or gestures at the empty seat.
Signs to back off
- Short answer, eyes back to her phone or laptop.
- She puts her headphones back on. That's a clear "no thanks." Respect it and don't try again later.
How to get her number
If you've had a good few minutes, ask before one of you leaves. Say "i have to run, but i'd like to talk more. can i get your number and buy you the next one?" If she's working, a lighter version works, "no pressure at all, but if you ever want to get coffee with me instead of at me, here's my number." Write it on a napkin and leave. It gives her the choice, and that's exactly why it works.
Texts you can send
ok what's actually good here, i always panic and order a latte
ok you've sold me. i'm trusting you with my morning
i have to run but i'd like to talk more. can i get your number and buy you the next one
no pressure, but if you want coffee with me instead of at me. (your number)
A woman's read
Coffee shops are honestly where i'd want to be approached, as long as the guy reads the room. Ask me in line, i'll talk. Hand me a napkin with your number and walk away, i'll think about you all afternoon, because you gave me the choice and didn't need an answer right then. Sit down at my table while i'm on a deadline and i'll be polite and never come back to that shop.
Your mission tonight
The move
Tomorrow morning, get your coffee somewhere busy, not drive through. In line or at pickup, ask one woman what's good there. If she talks back and lingers, ask for her number before you leave. If she's working, skip it or leave the napkin. You're practicing the walk over, not chasing a result.
Got the number?
Here's what to text a girl after getting her number and how to ask for her number if you want more ways to ask.
Questions guys ask
Is it ok to talk to a girl at a coffee shop?
Yes, in line, at the pickup counter or if she is people watching. Skip it if she has headphones on and is working. Talk where she is already standing, not at her table.
What do I say to a girl at a coffee shop?
Ask about the coffee. "What is actually good here, I always panic and order a latte." It is easy, real and gives her a chance to have an opinion.
Should I leave my number on a napkin?
It can work well when she is busy, because it gives her the choice with zero pressure. Write a short line and your number, hand it over with a smile and leave. Do not wait for her to respond.
