Val on this one
Why do my conversations always die?
It goes the same way every time. She answers, you ask something, she answers, you ask something else, and by text four it feels like pulling teeth. Then it just stops. It's not that you're boring. It's that the conversation has no hooks for her to grab.
Val's read
here's what it feels like on my side. you ask "how was your weekend." i say "good, went to a wedding." you say "nice, how was it." i say "fun." now i'm bored and i feel bad about being bored. you didn't give me anything. no opinion, no story, no little joke. if you'd said "a wedding, ok, rate the dance floor out of 10" i'd have written you a paragraph.
Why it dies
- Question after question. It feels like an interview, and interviews end.
- Nothing about you. She knows nothing more about you than she did at text one.
- Generic questions. "How was your day" and "what do you do for fun" have short, dead answers.
- No follow up. She mentions something interesting and you jump to a new topic.
- No plan. Texting forever with no date makes the chat feel pointless.
The fix: react, share, then ask
- React to what she said with a feeling or an opinion. "a wedding in october is elite timing"
- Share one small thing about you. "i went to one last month and the dj played the cha cha slide twice"
- Then ask something specific. "rate the dance floor out of 10"
You don't need a question in every text. A statement she can play with often works better than a question she has to answer.
Do and don't
Do
- Do follow up on the most interesting thing she said.
- Do have small opinions and playful takes.
- Do move to a phone call or a date once it's flowing.
Don't
- Don't ask three questions in a row without sharing anything.
- Don't send "lol" or "nice" and wait for her to carry it.
- Don't keep texting for weeks. A date is the best way to keep a conversation alive.
Texts you can send
a wedding in october is elite timing. rate the dance floor out of 10
no way, i went to one last month and the dj played the cha cha slide twice. what was the low point
ok i have a feeling you were the first one on the dance floor
you're fun to talk to. let's do this over a drink. friday?
A woman's read
i want to feel like i'm talking to a person, not filling out a form. so give me something. tell me what you think, tell me a tiny story, tease me about my answer. when a guy reacts to what i said and then shares a little of himself, i relax and i start asking him things back. that's when it stops dying. and when it's good, ask me out. the best conversations are the ones that move somewhere.
Your mission tonight
The move
Open your last conversation that died. Find the most interesting thing she said and write a reply that reacts to it, shares one thing about you, and ends with one specific question. If it's been less than a week, send it. Then try "react, share, ask" with the next person you talk to, online or in person.
If it's already gone dry, here's how to fix a dry texting conversation and how to keep a conversation going over text. If it dies in person, start with what to say after she says hi back.
Questions guys ask
Why do my conversations always die?
Usually because every text is a question and none of them share anything about you. React to what she said, share something small, then ask one specific question. That gives her something to grab.
Why do my conversations feel forced?
Generic questions like how was your day have short answers, so you end up pushing. Have opinions, tease a little, and follow up on the most interesting thing she said instead of switching topics.
How do I keep a conversation going with a girl without asking questions?
Make statements she can play with. A playful guess about her, a small opinion, or a quick story. "I have a feeling you were first on the dance floor" invites a reply without being a question.
