What to say instead of "you look nice"
"You look nice." She says thanks, and nothing happens in her face. You meant it. It just didn't land, because it's the same thing her boss says. Here's how to say it so it does something.
Why "you look nice" doesn't land
It's true, it's kind, and it's generic. It could be said to anyone by anyone. A compliment lands when it proves you were actually looking at her, specifically, and it has a little feeling in it. Specific plus feeling. That's the whole trick.
The three part formula
- Something specific you noticed. The color, the way she did her hair, how the dress moves, her laugh, her hands.
- The effect it has on you. Not what it is, what it does. "i can't stop looking," "it made my whole day," "i forgot what i was saying."
- Say it like you mean it. Eye contact, slow, no joke on the end to cover yourself.
20 things to say instead
On how she looks:
- "that color on you. i keep looking over."
- "you did something different with your hair and i can't stop staring."
- "you look like trouble tonight."
- "that dress is doing things to me and we're in a target."
- "i forgot what i was going to say. you walked in."
On who she is:
- "i love the way you talk to the dog like he understands."
- "you handled that thing with your mom so well. i was proud of you."
- "you make everybody in a room feel like they belong there."
- "your laugh is still my favorite sound."
- "the way you care about things makes me want to care about things."
Low key, during the day:
- "you looked so good this morning and i didn't say it. saying it now."
- "random, but you're really pretty and i don't say it enough."
- "that photo of you from the lake. still my favorite."
With heat:
- "come here. no reason. i just want to look at you."
- "i have been thinking about you all day and not in a polite way."
- "you have no idea what you do to me when you wear that."
Quiet moments:
- "i still get a little nervous around you sometimes. in a good way."
- "you're my favorite person. i don't want you to forget that."
- "i like my life a lot more because you're in it."
- "you look like home to me."
What to never say
- Anything comparing her to her past self or other women. "you look like you did when we met" sounds like a compliment and lands like a gut punch.
- "you look nice... did you do something?" Just stop at the compliment.
- A compliment with a request attached. "you look amazing, so can we..." She hears the second half only.
- Anything about weight, up or down, unless she brings it up and wants to hear it.

A woman's read
"You look nice" makes me feel like a coworker. "That color on you, I keep looking over" makes me feel seen, and a little warm. The difference is that the second one proves he actually looked, and that it did something to him. My favorite ones aren't even about how I look. "I love the way you talk to the dog" made me tear up in a parking lot once. And the one thing that ruins it instantly is a compliment with a request stapled to the end. Say the nice thing and walk away. I'll come find you.
The move
Today, say one specific thing you noticed about her and what it did to you. Eye contact, no joke on the end, no request attached. Then do it again tomorrow.
Make it a habit
One real compliment a day. Not three, not zero. Say it, hold the eye contact, don't joke it away. In two weeks you'll notice she stands differently when you walk in. Then try how to flirt with your wife and love notes for your wife for the next level.
Questions guys ask
What can I say instead of "you look nice"?
Name something specific you noticed and what it does to you. "That color on you, I keep looking over" or "you did something with your hair and I can't stop staring." Specific plus feeling is the formula.
How do I compliment my wife so she actually believes it?
Be specific, say it slowly with eye contact, and don't attach a joke or a request. Compliments about who she is, like how she handles people, often land deeper than compliments about how she looks.
What compliments should I avoid?
Anything comparing her to the past or other women, anything about weight unless she asks, and anything with a request attached. Those undo the compliment.
