Love notes that land (with templates you can steal)
"I want to leave her a note, but whatever I write sounds like a Hallmark card or a grocery list." The trick isn't being a poet. It's being specific about her.
What the research says
Psychologist Sara Algoe's research on gratitude in couples finds that expressing thanks reminds your partner why you're good together and pulls you closer over time, what she calls "find, remind, and bind" (University of North Carolina). Her lab's work suggests thanks lands best when it's about her, her effort and her qualities, not just how something helped you. The Gottmans call this building "fondness and admiration," and they treat small, regular appreciation as one of the strongest everyday habits a couple has (Gottman Institute).
The formula
One specific thing she did, plus what it says about her, plus how it makes you feel. Two or three sentences. Handwritten if you can.
Templates
- For the everyday. "I saw you [specific thing] today. You're so [quality]. I don't say it enough, but I notice."
- For something hard she handled. "The way you handled [situation] was [quality]. I was proud to be next to you."
- For a memory. "Still think about [specific memory]. You [what she did]. I'd marry you again for that alone."
- For her body and her, kept sweet. "You looked so good [when]. Not just the [outfit, hair], the way you were laughing. I couldn't stop looking."
- For the mom stuff. "Watching you with [kid] at [moment] made me fall for you a little more. You're a really good mom."
- A tiny one. "Lucky me." on a sticky note on her coffee mug. Short counts.
Where to leave them
- Her car steering wheel, her bathroom mirror, inside her laptop, in her coat pocket, in her suitcase before a trip.
- Once a week is plenty. Daily starts to feel like a routine.
Do and don't
- Don't write "thanks for doing the laundry." Write "you keep this whole house running and you make it look easy."
- Do use her actual words and inside jokes.
- Don't add a request at the end. A note with a "so tonight?" is a coupon, not a love note.
- Do keep it real. If you wouldn't say it out loud, rewrite it until you would.
You'll know it's working if
She texts you a photo of it. She keeps it, in her wallet, on the fridge, in a drawer. She leaves one back. She brings it up a week later.
If it isn't
If she seems to brush it off, keep it lower key, a text instead of a big note. Some people get uncomfortable with praise at first. If things are tense, a note won't fix it alone, but it can be a good repair. Start with how to apologize if that's where you are.
Texts you can send
watching you with the kids at breakfast made me fall for you a little more today
the way you handled your mom this week was so patient. i was proud of you
still think about you dancing at your cousins wedding. id marry you again for that alone
A woman's read
The notes I keep are never the fancy ones. They're the ones where he noticed something specific, like how I handled a hard call with my mom, and told me what it said about me. "Love you babe" on a card is sweet. "I saw what you did and you're amazing at it" lives in my wallet for a year.
The move
Write one note today with the formula: one specific thing she did, what it says about her, how it makes you feel. Leave it somewhere she'll find it tomorrow.
When it's bigger than a guide
This is a friend's advice built on published research, not therapy, and the girls are AI characters. If sex has stopped for a long time, there's pain, a medical change, a betrayal, or every talk turns into a fight, see a pro together. A licensed couples counselor (AAMFT directory) or a certified sex therapist (AASECT directory) does this every day, and a doctor visit is worth it if anything physical changed.
