How to apologize to your girlfriend
You messed up. Maybe big, maybe small. Either way, a lot of guys say sorry and somehow make it worse. Here's how to do it so she actually feels it.
What a real apology has
- What you did, named specifically. Not "sorry for whatever."
- How it affected her. This is the part most guys skip.
- What you'll do differently. Something you will actually do.
That's it. No "but." No explanation of your side yet.
What ruins it
- "I'm sorry you feel that way." That isn't an apology. It's blame wearing a tie.
- "I'm sorry, but." Everything before the but just disappeared.
- Explaining your reasons before she feels heard. Even good reasons sound like excuses at this point.
- Apologizing just to end the conversation. She can tell.
Text or in person?
For anything that matters, in person. A text can open the door though, especially if you're apart or she needs space. Use the text to say you know you messed up and you want to talk. Save the real apology for face to face.
Texts you can send
i was wrong earlier and i know it. can we talk tonight
im sorry i made fun of your work thing in front of my friends. that was embarrassing for you and it wasnt ok
i know youre upset and you have every reason to be. take your time, im not going anywhere
forgot to call the landlord again. thats on me. doing it first thing tomorrow
A woman's read
What she wants to know isn't really "is he sorry." It's "does he get it." When you name exactly what happened and how it felt for her, she can relax, because now she doesn't have to convince you it mattered. That was most of the fight right there. The guy who gets it in the first sentence usually gets forgiven a lot faster.
The move
Say it in person. Name the thing, name how it made her feel, say what changes. No "but." Then stop talking and let her answer.
Timing matters
Not right before bed. Not as one of you is walking out the door. Not in front of friends. Pick a calm, private moment when she has time to answer. If she isn't ready, tell her you'll be around when she is, and mean it.
Then follow through
The apology is the start, not the end. If you said you'd stop doing the thing, the real apology is the next few weeks of not doing it. That's what she'll remember.
If she isn't ready
Don't argue about whether she should accept it yet. Give her room, stay warm and normal, and keep doing what you said you'd do. If the hurt turned into a fight first, start with what to text after a fight. If you're not sure what you did, read what "I'm fine" really means.
Questions guys ask
Should I apologize over text?
For small things, sure. For anything big, use a text to open the door and do the real apology in person.
What if she doesn't accept my apology?
Give her time. Don't argue about whether she should accept it. Keep showing the change.
How do I apologize if I don't think I was totally wrong?
Apologize for your part, specifically. You can talk about the rest later, once she feels heard.
Should I buy her something?
A gift doesn't replace the words. After a real apology, a small thoughtful gesture can be nice. Before it, it can feel like a bribe.
