Val on this one
She said she's not looking for anything serious
Val's straight answer
When she says she's not looking for anything serious, believe her for now: it's information, not a test you're supposed to beat. Decide what you want, say it once without pressure, and keep it light.
It came out early. Maybe on the app, maybe on date one, maybe after a great night when you asked what she's looking for. "I'm not really looking for anything serious right now."
What's going on in her head
I've said this sentence a lot, and I meant something different almost every time:
- I just got out of something. I don't trust my own judgment yet.
- I'm not sure about you yet, and I don't want you planning a future after one drink.
- I genuinely want something casual. That's allowed too.
- I've been rushed before, and saying it first is my way of protecting the pace.
What it almost never means is "convince me." If you treat it like an obstacle, I'm going to feel unheard, which is the opposite of what makes someone want more.
The reddit version vs real life
The usual advice runs two directions. Either "she's telling you you're not the guy, leave now," or "act like you don't care and she'll catch feelings." The first is sometimes true. The second turns you into a guy playing a part, and it's exhausting to keep up.
What actually works is boring and effective: be honest about what you want, once, and then just be good company. Women relax around a man who isn't trying to win an argument about the label.
What to say back
If you're good with casual for now:
Texts you can send
fair enough. i like hanging out with you, no pressure on what it is
noted. still taking you to that taco place though
If you know you want a relationship and casual will hurt you, say that, kindly. It's not an ultimatum, it's just true. "i appreciate you saying that. im looking for something real so i'll be honest, i might not be the casual guy. but i like you."
Don't say:
- "that's fine, me neither" when it isn't.
- "you'll change your mind once you get to know me."
- "why not?" She doesn't owe you the full story on date two.
When to walk
If months go by, you're both fully in it, and she still flinches at any step forward, ask once, plainly. If the answer is still no, believe her the second time too.
Questions guys ask
What does it mean when she says she\'s not looking for anything serious?
Usually that she wants a slower pace, is unsure about you, or truly wants casual. It is rarely a challenge to win. Take it at face value and say what you want once.
Can it turn into a relationship?
Sometimes, when she feels no pressure and the time together is good. Do not count on it if you would be hurt waiting.
Should I stop seeing her?
Only if casual is not what you want. If it hurts you to wait, saying so and stepping back is the respectful move for both of you.
