Val on this one
She cancelled the second date. What now?
You picked the place, you ironed something, and at 3pm: "so sorry, something came up, can we rain check?" Your stomach dropped. Here's how to answer it, and how to know which kind of cancel you got.
A cancel is not a no. A cancel without a new day usually is.
That's the whole test. "So sorry, I'm wiped, can we do Sunday instead?" is a woman who still wants to see you. "So sorry, something came up, rain check?" with nothing else is a maybe, and the ball's in your court to find out which.
Signs it was a real reason
- She offered a new day without being asked, or grabs the first one you offer.
- She said what happened, briefly. Work, sick, a friend.
- She's warm in the texts around it, not just the apology.
- It's the first time.
Signs it's a soft no
- No new day, and she doesn't take yours.
- It's the second cancel.
- The texts have been flat since the first date.
- "Let me get back to you about this week" and then nothing.
What to text back
Be gracious, be short, and offer one new day. That's it. Not three days. Not "no worries!!!" with three exclamation marks that read like you're hurt. Not a joke about her flaking. One easy reschedule, then you wait.
Texts you can send
no worries at all, hope everything is ok. sunday afternoon instead? same place, i still want to try their fries
oh no, feel better. ill hold the plan. text me when youre human again and ill pick a night
all good. im free tuesday or thursday next week, pick one and ill handle the rest
sounds like a lot going on. no pressure from me. if things calm down and you want to grab that drink, text me a day
A woman's read
When I cancel on a guy I actually like, I feel terrible and I overcorrect. I offer a new day right away, I explain, I send an extra text later. When I cancel on a guy I'm lukewarm about, I keep it vague and hope he lets it fade. What makes me want to reschedule is a guy who's gracious and offers one easy new day. What makes me relieved I cancelled is a guy who sulks, or jokes about me flaking, or sends "it's fine" in a way that is clearly not fine.
The move
Reply within the hour. One warm line, one new day. Then wait. If she takes it, you're on. If she goes vague, let her be the one to come back with a day.
If she cancels twice
Two cancels is an answer, even when both reasons were real. Her life doesn't have room for you right now, and chasing a third date will just make the eventual no feel worse. Say something kind that puts the ball on her side, then make plans with someone else. If she wants in, she'll reach out with a day. Here's what to text when she cancels a date for the first date version, and how to plan a second date for when she says yes.
Questions guys ask
Does cancelling a second date mean she is not interested?
Not always. A cancel with a new day offered usually means she's still in. A cancel with no new day, or a second cancel, usually means she's fading.
How do I respond when she cancels a date?
Short and gracious, with one specific new day. No sulking, no jokes about flaking, no long message. Then let her respond to the new day.
Should I try again after she cancels twice?
No. Two cancels is an answer even if both reasons were real. Send one kind line that leaves it with her, then move on. If she wants to see you, she'll come back with a day.
