How to ask a coworker out respectfully
Plenty of good couples met at work. Plenty of awkward Mondays did too. The difference is almost always how the guy asked. Here's how to do it so that either answer is fine for both of you.
First, should you ask at all?
Don't ask if:
- You're her boss, or she's yours, or either of you has a say in the other's job. Even a perfect ask puts her in a bad spot.
- Your company forbids it. Check the handbook. Some require you to tell HR if you date.
- She's only ever been professional with you. Being friendly at work is part of the job. It's not a signal.
You can consider it if you're peers, you get along outside of work topics, and she seeks you out sometimes.
Build a little real rapport first
Chat about things that aren't work. Grab coffee with a group. See if she's as interested in talking to you as you are in talking to her. If every conversation is about the project, that's your answer.
How to ask
- Ask once, clearly, privately. Not in front of anyone, not on a team chat, not at the holiday party after drinks.
- Make it a specific, small plan. Coffee or a drink, a day, outside of work hours.
- Give her a real out. Tell her it's totally fine if not and nothing changes at work. Mean it.
- Keep it about a date, not about her looks. Comments on her body at work are a fast way to a very bad meeting.
If she says no, or a soft no
"Totally fine, thanks for being straight with me." Then be exactly as normal and professional as before. Don't ask again. A "maybe" or "I'm so busy" without a new day is a no. Read more in what to say when she says she's busy. Being gracious here protects her, and it protects you.
Texts you can send
hey, totally separate from work. would you want to grab a drink with me saturday? zero pressure, nothing changes either way
ok this is not about the q3 deck. want to get dinner sometime this week, just us?
totally fine, thanks for being honest. see you at standup
great. saturday at 7, i know a good spot. ill send the address
A woman's read
Being asked out at work can be lovely, or it can make me dread the elevator. The difference is whether I feel like I can say no without paying for it. The guy who asks once, privately, gives me an easy out, and then is totally normal if I pass? I respect him more, honestly. The guy who asks in front of people, or acts weird after, makes me never want to sit near him again.
The move
If you're peers and the policy allows it, ask her once, privately, for a specific small plan outside work. Tell her it's fine if not. Whatever she says, be just as normal tomorrow.
If she says yes
Keep it quiet at work for now. Act the same around the office. Plan a good first date, ideas in first date ideas that aren't boring.
Questions guys ask
Is it okay to ask a coworker out?
If you're peers, your company allows it, and you've built some real rapport, yes. Never if one of you manages the other.
How do you ask a coworker out without making it awkward?
Once, privately, for a specific small plan outside of work hours, with a clear out. Then act completely normal no matter what she says.
What if my coworker says no?
Thank her for being honest, don't ask again, and stay professional and friendly. That keeps work comfortable for both of you.
How do I know if a coworker likes me?
She seeks you out, talks about non work things, and suggests hanging out. Being polite or friendly at work alone doesn't mean interest.
