What to wear to a bar to meet women
You're standing in front of your closet an hour before you're supposed to meet the guys. You want to look good. You don't want to look like you're trying to look good. Here's how to do both.
The rule: fit beats brand, every time
A $20 tee that fits across the shoulders and hits at your belt looks better than a $120 one that bags. Women aren't checking labels. They're checking if your clothes look like they belong to you. If you only fix one thing, fix fit. Shoulders seam at the edge of your shoulders. Sleeves end mid bicep on a tee. Pants that don't pool at the shoe.
Three outfits that work
- The default. Dark jeans, a fitted plain tee in white, black, navy or olive, clean white sneakers or Chelsea boots. Add an overshirt or a light jacket if it's cool. This is the right answer 80% of the time.
- A step up. Dark jeans or chinos, a casual button up with the sleeves rolled twice, boots or loafers. For a cocktail bar or a date spot. The rolled sleeves are doing work, don't skip them.
- The dive. Jeans, a henley or a worn in tee, boots. Nothing shiny. You want to look like you belong there, not like you came from an office.
Shoes
Women look at your shoes. Not for the brand, for the condition. Clean them. Scuffed, dirty sneakers undo the whole outfit. One pair of clean white leather sneakers and one pair of brown boots cover every bar you'll ever walk into.
The small stuff that reads as "put together"
- A watch. Even a cheap one. It's the one accessory that always lands.
- Clothes that smell clean and are not wrinkled. Steam them in the bathroom while you shower.
- Hair done the way your barber showed you. Not just dried.
- Two sprays of a cologne, max. Neck and chest, not the clothes. More on that in how to smell good all day.
- Trimmed nails. She'll see your hands on the bar.
The one mistake most guys make
Overdressing to compensate. The guy in the shiny shirt, the loud sneakers, the chain and the three fragrances is louder than the room, and women read that as nervous. You want to look like you got dressed in five minutes, because you did, because everything already fits.
What not to wear
- Graphic tees with a joke on them. The joke is now your whole personality.
- A suit jacket over a tee, unless you genuinely came from a wedding.
- Sandals, cargo shorts, or anything you'd mow a lawn in.
- A hat indoors, unless it's that kind of bar and it's that kind of hat.
Texts you can send
dark jeans white tee boots. yes or no, be honest
thanks. i put in a solid five minutes. the shirt did the rest
you said you liked the jacket. im going to need you to say that again in person. thursday?
A woman's read
Here's what I notice in the first second a guy walks into a bar, and it isn't the brand of anything. It's whether his shirt fits his shoulders, whether his shoes are clean, and whether he looks comfortable in what he's wearing. The guy in the plain fitted tee and clean sneakers who isn't fussing with his clothes looks more confident than the guy in the $200 shirt who keeps adjusting it. And please, two sprays of cologne. If I can smell you from across the bar I'm already backing up.
The move
Tonight, the default: dark jeans that fit, a plain fitted tee, clean sneakers or boots, a watch, two sprays. Steam the shirt while you shower. Then stop thinking about your clothes and go talk to someone.
If your closet can't do this yet
Start with two pairs of dark jeans that fit, four plain tees, one casual button up, white sneakers and brown boots. Under $300 total if you shop smart. How to dress better on a budget walks through it, and once you're dressed, how to get a girl's number at a bar covers the rest of the night.
Questions guys ask
What should a guy wear to a bar to meet girls?
Dark jeans that fit, a plain fitted tee or casual button up with the sleeves rolled, and clean white sneakers or boots. Add a watch and two sprays of cologne. Fit matters more than brand.
Do women notice what guys wear at bars?
They notice fit, clean shoes, and whether you look comfortable. They rarely notice brands. Overdressing or looking fussy reads as nervous.
What should I not wear to a bar?
Graphic tees with jokes, shiny shirts, loud sneakers, sandals, cargo shorts, and more than two sprays of cologne. Anything that is louder than you are.
