My wife is always tired. What that usually means, and what helps
"By the time the kids are down she's done. She's asleep on the couch by 9, or scrolling and not really there. I miss her, and I feel like a jerk for wanting more from someone who's that tired." You're not a jerk. But the fix probably isn't what you think.
What the research says
A lot of the exhaustion isn't the tasks. It's the thinking about the tasks. Sociologist Allison Daminger studied couples and found that the "cognitive" side of running a home, anticipating what's needed, researching options, deciding, and monitoring, falls mostly on women, even in couples who split the physical chores fairly evenly (American Sociological Review, 2019). That's the mental load. It's the running list in her head, and it doesn't turn off when she sits down. Being tired from that looks a lot like being distant.
Tired or distant? How to tell
- Tired: she's warm when she has energy. Weekends are better. She still laughs with you. She says "i'm exhausted," not "i'm fine."
- Distant: energy isn't the pattern. She's up and lively for friends and flat for you. Conversation is only logistics. If this sounds closer, start with we feel like roommates.
- Possibly medical: if she's tired all day for weeks, with no clear reason, gently suggest a doctor. Thyroid, iron and sleep issues are common and fixable.
What actually helps
- Own a whole category, not a task. Not "i'll do bath time if you tell me." Own bath time. Own the pediatrician. Own groceries, including noticing when the milk is low. The noticing is the help.
- Don't ask "what can i do." That's one more thing for her to manage. Look, decide, do. Then tell her it's done.
- Give her an hour that's hers. Say "saturday morning is yours. sleep in, go out, whatever. i've got the kids." Then actually have them, including snacks.
- Make bedtime hers too. Clean up the kitchen while she showers. Have the bed turned down. Little hotel moments.
- Touch without an ask. Rub her feet while you watch something. Don't let it turn into a request. The tired woman who gets a foot rub with no strings starts to relax around you again.
Do and don't
- Do notice out loud. Say "you did a lot today. i see it."
- Don't compare your tired to her tired. Nobody wins that one.
- Don't keep score of what you did. Just do it.
- Do protect one night a week that isn't about the kids or the house.
- Don't take "i'm exhausted" as rejection. Take it as information.
You'll know it's working if
She has energy left at 9. She starts a conversation that isn't about logistics. She touches you first. She stops saying "did you remember" because you remembered.
If it isn't
If you've taken real weight off her for a month and she's still flat only with you, it probably isn't tired. Say "i've been trying to carry more, and i still feel far from you. can we talk about that?" That's a different conversation, and she says I don't do enough and what to do when your wife is stressed cover the next steps.
Texts you can send
i booked the kids dentist thing and handled the permission slip. one less thing in your head
go shower. ill do the kitchen and bedtime. you dont need to come back down
saturday morning is yours. sleep in, go out, whatever you want. i have the kids and the snacks
A woman's read
When I say I'm tired, I don't mean my legs hurt. I mean my brain hasn't stopped since 6am. Who needs what tomorrow, what's for dinner, did I sign the thing. When he asks "what can I do to help," I love him and I also want to scream, because now I have to make a list for him too. What makes me feel less tired is him just handling the dentist without telling me, or noticing we're out of milk. Then I have a little room left in my head at night, and some of it goes to him.
The move
This week, pick one whole category and own it quietly, from noticing to done. Then give her one morning that's hers. Don't announce it as a favor. Just do it.
When it's bigger than a guide
This is a friend's advice built on published research, not therapy, and the girls are AI characters. If sex has stopped for a long time, there's pain, a medical change, a betrayal, or every talk turns into a fight, see a pro together. A licensed couples counselor (AAMFT directory) or a certified sex therapist (AASECT directory) does this every day, and a doctor visit is worth it if anything physical changed.
Questions guys ask
Why is my wife always tired?
Often it is the mental load: the constant anticipating, deciding and tracking that keeps running after the chores are done. Research shows this part falls mostly on women. If she is exhausted all day for weeks with no clear reason, a doctor visit is worth it.
How can I help my wife when she is exhausted?
Own whole categories, including the noticing, rather than asking what you can do. Give her unscheduled time that is really hers. Handle bedtime and cleanup so her evening ends earlier.
Is my wife tired or losing interest in me?
Tired has a pattern: better on weekends, warm when she has energy. Distant does not track energy and shows up as logistics only talk. If you've genuinely lightened her load for a month and she's still flat only with you, it's worth a direct, kind conversation.
