What to do when your wife is stressed
When your wife is stressed, your instinct is to fix it. That's a good instinct, aimed at the wrong moment. Here's what actually helps.
Ask what she needs
Simple, and almost nobody does it. "Do you want me to help fix it, or do you just need to vent?" Then do what she says. Sometimes she wants a plan. A lot of times she wants someone on her side for ten minutes.
Listen without solving
If she's venting, your job is to listen. Nod, ask questions, say things like "that's ridiculous" and "no wonder you're tired." Don't jump in with five solutions. Don't compare it to your day.
Take things off her plate
This is the big one. Stress is often about load. Look at what she's carrying and take something off, completely, without being asked. Dinner, bedtime, the grocery order, the call she's dreading. Don't ask "what can I do," which hands her one more task. Just do the obvious thing.
Give her time alone
Sometimes the best help is a quiet hour. "I've got the kids, go take a bath, go for a walk, go nap." Then handle it so she doesn't hear anything.
Don't say these
- "Just relax."
- "You're overreacting."
- "It's not that big a deal."
- "Well, I had a rough day too."
Small comforts count
Her favorite takeout. A blanket and her show. A hug that lasts longer than normal. You don't have to fix the stress to make it lighter.
Texts you can send
thinking about you. dinner is handled tonight, dont even think about it
do you want help fixing it or do you just want to vent tonight. either is good
i called the plumber, hes coming thursday. one less thing
ive got bedtime. go take the long bath. i mean it
A woman's read
When I'm stressed, what I need most from my husband is to not feel alone in it. I don't need a lecture or a spreadsheet. I need him to notice, take one thing away without asking me to explain how, and maybe hold me for a minute. The moment I see he's handled something, my whole body unclenches a little.
The move
Tonight, ask her "fix or vent?" and do what she says. Then take one task completely off her list without asking which one.
When it's more than stress
If she's stressed for weeks, can't sleep, seems hopeless, or stops enjoying things she used to love, it may be more than a hard stretch. Gently encourage her to talk with her doctor or a licensed therapist, and offer to help her find one. If she ever talks about hurting herself, call or text 988 right away. You can be a great support. You don't have to be her only one. If she says she's fine and you're not sure, see what "I'm fine" really means.
