First date ideas in San Diego
San Diego makes it almost too easy. The weather is fine, the ocean is right there, and every other block has tacos. The trick is picking something that isn't just a beach bar. Everything below was open this year, but places change, check hours before you go.
The low-key drink
- Realm of the 52 Remedies (Convoy District, Kearny Mesa). A hidden bar behind a white door inside Common Theory, and one of the best bars in North America this year. Text her: "theres a secret bar behind a door on convoy. thursday?"
The walk and talk
- Sunset Cliffs Natural Park (Point Loma, south of Ocean Beach). Cliffs, caves and the best sunset in the city. Stay back from the edge. Text her: "sunset cliffs saturday? i'll bring a blanket and bad snacks"
- Balboa Park, along El Prado (Balboa Park). The pedestrian stretch with the old Spanish buildings, musicians and fountains. Text her: "balboa park walk sunday afternoon? we can pretend we're in spain"
Jules made me add a note here. She wanted to send you up Torrey Pines, but the reserve is closed for construction and isn't scheduled to reopen until March 2027. Her words: "do it for date three, he'll need the cardio."
The activity date
- Belmont Park (Mission Beach). Ride the Giant Dipper, the 100 year old wooden coaster, then walk the boardwalk. Text her: "giant dipper at belmont park saturday? you can scream, i won't tell"
Cheap and cute
- Little Italy Mercato (Little Italy, West Date St). The Saturday farmers market, 8am to 2pm. Coffee, flowers, snacks, and lots to point at. Text her: "little italy mercato saturday morning? coffee and we buy something weird"
The rainy day
- Mingei International Museum (Balboa Park). Folk art, craft and design, with a nice cafe. Text her: "rainy day plan. the mingei in balboa park, then lunch?"
The impress-her dinner
- Born and Raised (Little Italy, India St). A big, glamorous steakhouse with tableside steak Diane. It's dressy, so tell her. Text her: "i got us a table at born and raised friday. it's dressy, wear what you love"
The late-night bite
- Tacos El Gordo (Gaslamp, F St). Adobada carved off the trompo, open until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays. Text her: "you can't leave the gaslamp without tacos el gordo. come on"

A woman's read
In a city where every guy suggests the beach, the one with a specific plan stands out. "Sunset at the cliffs, then tacos" is a date. "Want to hang at the beach sometime" is a maybe. Same ocean, very different energy. Give her a time, a place and a little reason to say yes.
The move
Text her a sunset at Sunset Cliffs with a day and a time. Have the hidden bar on Convoy or Tacos El Gordo ready as the second stop.
Before you go
Places change, check hours before you go. Born and Raised is the one to book. Sunset Cliffs gets crowded at sunset on weekends, so go a little early. Jules also has a guide on what to wear on a first date, useful if you're doing Born and Raised.
Tell Val about her and she'll plan the whole night.
