Val on this one
She takes hours to text back. What it means and what to do
You sent it at 10am. She answered at 4:30pm, and it was a good answer. Then you replied in ninety seconds and now you're back to waiting. Here's what the gap is and isn't telling you.
Slow is a speed, not a signal
Some people are two minute texters and some are six hour texters, and it mostly has nothing to do with you. I have a friend who leaves her phone in her bag at work and answers everyone at once on the train home. Her boyfriend used to think she was mad at him every single day. She was in meetings.
What tells you something is what's inside the reply, not when it lands. A slow reply that's warm, specific, and asks you something back is a good reply. A fast reply that's "haha nice" is a bad one.
Signs the slow is fine
- When she does answer, it's a full thought, and she picks up where you left off.
- She asks you things. She remembers what you told her.
- She says yes to plans, or offers a day when she can't.
- The pace is consistent. She's always a few hours. That's just her.
Signs the slow is a fade
- Replies are getting slower and shorter at the same time.
- She answers your question but never asks one.
- You've suggested a plan and it floated away.
- She used to be quick with you and now she isn't, with nothing else changed.
What not to do
- Don't match her pace on purpose. Waiting six hours to "even the score" is a game, and she can feel it.
- Don't send "you alive?" or "guess you're busy." Both make the gap about you.
- Don't send three texts into one gap. One open thread is plenty.
- Don't ask her why she's slow. Nobody has a good answer to that question.
What to do instead
Text her when you have something to say, reply when you see it, and stop counting. Then move the whole thing off text. People who text slowly are often great in person. The faster you get to a real plan with a day, the less the gap matters.
Texts you can send
ok that is a strong opinion on pineapple pizza and i respect it. are you a fast eater or a savor it person
you take forever to text back and im not even mad, i just want to hear this story in person. thursday?
no apology needed. slow texter, good texter. its a rare combo
random but i saw the dog version of you today. tiny, judgmental, very cute
A woman's read
When I like a guy and I'm slow, it's because I'm living my day, and I actually enjoy having his text waiting for me. What makes me pull back is when I open my phone to three messages, or to "guess you're busy lol." Now I feel managed. The guy who texts like he has his own stuff going on, and then asks me to tacos on Thursday, is the one I answer fast.
The move
Stop clocking her. Reply when you see it, keep it warm and specific, and inside the next two exchanges put a real plan with a day in front of her. Her answer to the plan is the only timing that matters.
If the gap keeps growing
If every reply is slower and shorter than the last, and she dodged a plan, you're watching a fade, and no texting rhythm fixes that. Send one easy plan with a day. If it goes nowhere, let it go warm. Here's how to tell if she's losing interest, and what to text after no reply for 2 days if it goes fully quiet.
Questions guys ask
Is it a bad sign if she takes hours to text back?
Not by itself. A lot of people text slowly. What matters is whether her replies are warm, specific and ask you something. Short, slow and no questions is the bad version.
Should I wait as long as she does to reply?
No. Matching her delay on purpose is a game and it reads like one. Reply when you see it and keep your life full so you're not watching the clock.
Should I say something about her slow replies?
No. There is no good answer to "why are you slow," and asking makes the gap about you. Suggest a plan instead. Slow texters are often great in person.
