How to start working out when you hate the gym
Hating the gym is normal. It's loud, confusing, and full of guys who seem to know exactly what they're doing. Here's the thing. You don't have to love it. You just have to start small enough that you can't fail.
Start with walking
Seriously. A daily walk is the easiest habit to build, and it counts. Aim for a bit more than you do now. Same time every day if you can. Put a podcast on and go.
Add three short sessions a week
You don't need an hour. Twenty to thirty minutes, three times a week, at home or at a quiet hour at the gym. Stick to a few basic moves:
- Squats, down to a chair if you need it
- Push ups, on a counter or your knees is fine
- Rows, with a backpack, a band or dumbbells
- A plank
Two or three rounds. Stop while you could still do a little more. You want to finish thinking "that wasn't so bad."
Pick the least annoying option
Hate crowds? Go early or late. Hate gyms entirely? A pair of dumbbells at home works. Get bored easily? Try a class, a climbing gym or a pickup game. The best workout is the one you'll actually show up for.
Eat a bit better, not perfectly
Protein at breakfast is a simple start. Eggs, Greek yogurt, a shake. You don't need to overhaul your whole diet in week one.
Write it down
A note on your phone. The date and what you did. Seeing a streak keeps you going on the days motivation doesn't show up.
Texts you can send
walking at 7 tomorrow before work. come with or im going alone and judging you
3 rounds. squats push ups rows. 20 min. thats it
can you show me how to do a row without hurting myself. ill buy lunch
missed yesterday. going today. not starting over
A woman's read
Here's what I'd tell you as a trainer and as a woman. Nobody is checking your bench numbers. What women notice is how you carry yourself. A few weeks of walking and basic strength work tends to show up in your posture and your energy before it shows up in the mirror. And that's what walks into the room first.
The move
This week, walk every day and do one twenty minute session of squats, push ups and rows. That's all. Write it down when you do.
When you miss a day
You will. Everyone does. Just do the next one. Missing a day doesn't break anything. Starting over every Monday does. Once the habit sticks, the rest of the glow up gets easier too. Here's how to dress better for dates when you're ready.
If you have a health condition or haven't been active in a long time, check with your doctor before you start.
Questions guys ask
How often should a beginner work out?
Three short strength sessions a week plus daily walking is a solid start.
Can I get in shape without a gym?
Yes. Walking, bodyweight moves and a pair of dumbbells at home go a long way.
How long until I see results?
It varies a lot from person to person. Most guys notice their energy and sleep improving before they see big changes in the mirror.
What if I miss a day?
Just do the next one. Missing a day doesn't break anything. Quitting does.
