Date night ideas for married couples
Married date night has a way of turning into dinner at the same place, talking about the dishwasher. That's not a date, that's a meeting with breadsticks. Here's how to make it feel like dating again.
The rule: something new
Novelty is the thing. Doing something new together tends to make couples feel closer than repeating the same comfortable thing. It doesn't have to be fancy. It just has to be different.
Out of the house
- A cooking class, or a wine or beer tasting.
- A comedy show, or live music somewhere small.
- Bowling, mini golf or a barcade. Yes, as adults. It's fun.
- A hike to somewhere with a view, with snacks in your bag.
- Drinks at a hotel bar in your own city. Feels like a trip.
- Recreate your first date, same place if you can.
At home, after the kids are down
- Cook something new together, with music on.
- A card or board game with real stakes, like loser gives a massage.
- Picnic on the living room floor.
- Watch the movie you watched when you were dating.
- Phones in a drawer, a bottle of wine, and a list of questions you've never asked each other.
How to actually make it happen
Put it on the calendar and treat it like it matters. Book the sitter, make the reservation, plan the whole thing. The best part for her is often not having to organize it. Take turns planning if you like, but go first.
No logistics talk
For the length of the date, no talking about the kids' schedule, the bills or the house. It's surprisingly hard. Do it anyway.
Texts you can send
sitters booked friday 7 to 11. im planning everything. just show up
wear the green dress friday. thats all youre getting
kids down by 8 tonight. i have wine and a plan
what if we went back to that first bar friday. same booth if its free
A woman's read
As a wife, the date itself is only half of it. The other half is that I didn't have to plan it. When my husband books the sitter, picks the place and tells me what time to be ready, I feel like his girlfriend again, not his co-manager. And when we try something we've never done together, even if it's a little dumb, we laugh like we used to.
The move
Pick one idea from this list, book it for this week or next, and plan every detail yourself, including childcare if you have kids.
Make it regular
A date every week or two beats a big one every six months. Even an hour counts. If things feel distant lately, start with how to get the spark back, and see how to make your wife feel appreciated.
